WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY
The Garden Route attracts thousands of visitors each year in search of scenic soul food.
Many of the area’s residents rely on the economic benefits of Eco-tourism. Added to this we rely on a healthy environment in order for ourselves to prosper. Knysna Tourism urges all to take a pledge this World Environment Day to conserve and protect the extraordinary environment within which we live.
The theme for this year’s World Environment Day is “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care.” Living within planetary boundaries is the most promising strategy for ensuring a healthy future. Human prosperity need not, literally cost the earth.
Living sustainably is about doing more and better with less. So take a pledge and make a difference!
• Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.
• Support local – buy local. By doing so you will not only decrease your carbon footprint, but you will also be boosting the local economy. The Greater Knysna has awesome farmer markets where fresh, seasonal produce can be found. http://www.visitknysna.co.za/blog/knysna-sedgefield-community-markets.html
• Do not use disposable plastic bags, which end up scattered across both terrestrial landscapes and floating in our ailing seas as well. They are devastating to the wildlife. Say NO to plastic shopping bags.
• We live in paradise, instead of driving to the store, take a walk or cycle instead, and soak up the beauty of where you are, thus reducing your carbon emissions.
• Get your hands dirty and plant a veggie garden. It is therapeutic and there are few things in life more rewarding than picking and eating food grown at home.
• Save electricity and reduce carbon emission by turning off all your techno devices and head outdoors to explore. It will soothe your soul and help save the planet all at once.
• If while walking on one of our many sublime beaches you encounter trash, pick it up. You may save some ocean life and you will also be helping keep the Garden Route beautiful for our many visitors.
